The first web site goes online.

The first ever website described Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web project, and is archived here.

In the World Wide Web, combining the ideas of hypertext and the internet, information would be freely exchanged between users of different computers, different operating systems and different software.

For the 'Information Age', it appears that the design of the World Wide Web was as great a step forward as Gutenberg's press. However, it's interesting to note that despite the immediate and obvious impact of the Web, it mainly brought together existing technologies and ideas rather than introducing new ones; it was already possible to communicate across the globe by telephone, fax or mail- the web simply offered a faster, more efficient alternative.
